Thailand's weather has a reputation that preceeds it. Even if you haven't been to the Kingdom you've probably been lectured by those that have about the eternal humidity, hot days and seemingly hotter nights. So let's get down to the facts about the weather so you can decide when to visit. When weighing up airfare and accomodation prices, getting a good balance is key.
Bangkok's temperature ranges
The month-on-month temperature is as follows:

You can see that there isn't much of a change in average temperature however there will be days up to 40 degrees with intense humidity. Thailand's weather is more oppressive than it appears on paper.
What about rain?
The person who coined the phrase "when it rains, it pours" may well have been in Thailand at the time. The first Thai storm I experienced (in Bangkok) was out of season yet the thunder and the downpour that came with it rivalled anything I've seen in Australia. I learned a few things about the Bangkok drainage system that day too, but that's another story...
Ok, ok, here are the rainfall numbers for you too:

Clearly there is a peak in rainfall in September and October while very little rainfall over the Christmas and New Year period. Much of the rain is delivered in heavy yet short bursts, often in the form of a thunderstorm.
Does it get cold?
This of course is a relative question but yeah it can get cool at night (although most nights are hot too). Some people like to take a light jumper, jacket or cardigan if they are going to be out late just incase.
The weather in the mountain regions can get very cold. Make no mistake, it can be a far cry from the sauna like conditions you'll encounter in other parts of the Thailand so be prepared if your travels take you in that direction.
So, when should you go?
Well hopefully you have formed some opinion on Thai weather by now because my advice doesn't stray from the norm - go during the cooler months (the end of November, into February). You'll still have hot days to contend with but less rain, making your trip to Thailand that little bit more comfortable.
If you get tempted by a cheaper airfare and go to Thailand into March and April then be prepared for a weather pattern that consists of heat, heat, and some more heat. It's doable however I'm willing to bet that by the time you return you will be able to hand draw a detailed map featuring the location of every air conditioned department store and shopping centre in town!
